“Regenerative NFT” — What is the future of solving the climate change problem with web3?
Hello everyone, we are the founder team of SINRA, a project to solve the problem of climate change with “Regenerative NFT”. In this entry, we will give you an overview of the project.
Solving Climate Change Problems from Global and Local Perspectives
SINRA aims to achieve both “a state in which nature on earth continues to regenerate” and “a world in which local economies can operate sustainably”. Forests, oceans, and other natural areas provide many immeasurable values, such as absorbing greenhouse gasses, preserving biodiversity, and promoting the circulation of soil, water, and air. However, these values have been overlooked, and natural resources that are not fully recognized for their economic value have been regarded as worthless or a liability from the perspective of local economies. As a result, deforestation, illegal logging, and conversion of cash crops to farmland due to over-exploitation are occurring, and forests with the capacity to absorb and store carbon are rapidly disappearing around the world.
On the other hand, according to the Sixth Synthesis Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released recently (March 20, 2023), the temperature increase since the Industrial Revolution has already been observed at 1.1 degrees Celsius. If this trend continues, it will be difficult to maintain the world’s ecosystems, and serious damage is expected to occur. As we humans receive various resources from ecosystems and depend on them for our livelihood, it is inevitable that we will have a significant negative impact on this issue. This critical situation calls for a change in approach from “sustainable” to “regenerative,” which means to solve the problem at its root, restore, and regenerate, rather than “sustainable” which means not to worsen the current situation in order to sustain it.
Therefore, SINRA uses NFT to promote the visualization of the intrinsic value of nature, including carbon credits, and the involvement and investment of people in this value. It is also an important mission to create a beneficial situation for the local economy by conserving, regenerating, and amplifying natural resources, rather than destroying them.
SINRA’s Role
SINRA helps to visualize the potential carbon credits generated by natural resources such as forests, oceans, and farmland. Once the carbon credits are generated, it is possible to hold them through “Regenerative NFT” and utilize them for contributing to the environment. (As a first step, we are preparing a “Regenerative NFT” that can contribute to the creation of Japanese compliance carbon credit “J-Credits”.)
By digitally handling the carbon credits that will be created in the future or have been created through the “Regenerative NFT”, it will be possible for people from all over the world to participate in this movement. Any individual or organization that wants to “solve climate change problems” or “protect local nature” and aims for a regenerative planet can participate in this project.
The profits generated from the sale of NFTs will be returned to natural resource owners and local communities, leading to further restoration of natural resources and revitalization of local economies.
Technology that Handles “SINRABANSHO”
SINRA starts from the forests of Japan, where about 70% of the land is forest. Our goal is to fuse technology with the Japanese view of nature, which has been nurtured in a rich, beautiful, yet at the same time harsh natural environment. This fusion will ultimately handle not only carbon credits, but also biodiversity and other multidimensional values (“SINRABANSHO” — a Japanese concept of the all creations in nature = the universe). Furthermore, by positioning SINRA as a “public good” built on a public blockchain, we will realize a world where everyone can freely exchange diverse environmental values without depending on a specific platform.
Create the Butterfly Effect!
SINRA’s “Regenerative NFT” is depicted as a digital artwork with a “butterfly” motif. We see environmental values such as carbon credits not only as a financial product, but also as a symbol (NFT) with multidimensional values such as “an expression of responsibility for the global environment,” “the joy of owning environmental values as art with ensured traceability,” and “the right to participate in the community”. By doing so, we aim to bring together the small actions of each individual, like the fluttering of a butterfly’s wings, to restore a regenerative and beautiful world.
Road Map
Finally, we are ready to release the first service this year (July 2023). We will share the latest status of the project on Twitter, so please follow our twitter account if you are interested.
Also, everyone who shares SINRA’s ideas and is interested in NFT is highly welcome to join the Discord community, so please feel free to join us.
We look forward to meeting you!
